REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT <br /> DATE: December 20, 2011 Re: Comm. 498 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 10:10 am <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Environmental Management, to which was referred Comm. No. 498, <br /> reports as follows: <br /> Communication No. 498, from Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated November 30, 2011, requests <br /> confirmation of the appointment of Russell Ruderman to the County of Hawai`i Environmental <br /> Management Commission. <br /> Ms. Charmaine Shigemura, Executive Assistant to the Mayor, related that Mr. Ruderman is a 26 <br /> year resident of Hawai`i who lives in Council District 5 and is the owner of Island Naturals <br /> Markets located in Hilo, Pahoa, Kailua-Kona, and Kealakekua. She further stated that he is also <br /> a former member of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, the Puna Community Council, the <br /> Waawaaa Community Association, and the Big Island Rainforest Action Group. She added that <br /> he acknowledges being a Democrat, and will be serving a term to expire on December 31, 2015, <br /> replacing Michelle Zalenski who resigned. <br /> Mr. Hoffmann stated that Mr. Ruderman is ideally suited and highly qualified for this <br /> commission, and thanked the Mayor's office for submitting an experienced nominee. Mr. Blas <br /> expressed gratitude for the nominee's volunteer efforts in his district. Mr. Yoshimoto also <br /> expressed appreciation for Mr. Ruderman's gracious assistance to him and his son without <br /> knowing him personally or realizing that he was a Council Member but just any member of the <br /> public. Ms. Ford, Mr. Ikeda, and Chairperson Smart all voiced similar statements of support. <br /> Mr. Ruderman is not required to be present at the final confirmation before the full Council. <br /> EMC Rept.
