The current contract extension for green waste operations expires on December 31, 2012. The Department of Environmental Management(DEM) intends to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to expand organic waste diversion and establish compost operations at the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill and the West Hawai`i Sanitary Landfill. The department intends to continue providing green waste drop-off sites at recycling and transfer stations for the convenience of residents, including Kailua-Kona. Through research of the industry, they have determined that a multi-year contract is necessary to enable adequate return on investment, and that a ten (10) year contract will provide the best opportunity for cost-effective organics diversion and compost operations. Establishing organics diversion sites and compost operations such as this supports the County's effort to divert waste from our landfills.
