<br /> 2.3.1 Administration. Afull-time project coordinator, Nelson Ho, and three part-time <br /> attendants comprised the staff of KRRC. The project coordinator was responsible <br /> for: <br /> • scheduling and supervision of attendants; <br /> • establishment of operational policies and rules; <br /> • administration of the contract with HIEDB; <br /> • interfacing with HIEDB, Recycle Hawai`i's subcontractors, and volunteer <br /> goups; and <br /> • measurement and reporting of achievements. <br /> Site attendants: <br /> • monitored recycling and reuse activities to prevenbminimize contamination; <br /> • enforced operations policies and rules; <br /> • monitored incoming and outgoing reuse transactions; <br /> • provided public education; and <br /> • assisted customers as necessary. <br /> Recycle Hawaii also administered a volunteer program. Volunteers donated <br /> 1,221 hours during the project, performing site attendant and site maintenance <br /> duties. <br /> 2.3.2 Customer education. Efforts to publicize KRRC and educate customers included: <br /> • a mailing to all Puna District households announcing the opening of KRRC; <br /> • a grand opening ceremony on Mazch 29, 2003; <br /> • distribution of handouts at KRRC; <br /> • a quarterly newsletter; <br /> • dedicated pages on Recycle Hawai`i's web site; <br /> • one on one education of individual customers; <br /> • educational workshops at KRRC; <br /> • an Art and Objects From Opala show at KRRC; and <br /> • a community incentive fund to entice community groups to donate services to <br /> and become involved with KRRC. <br /> Recycle Hawaii contracted with Jay West, owner of Peak Creations, to schedule, <br /> publicize, and conduct workshops related to high value-added glass <br /> manufacturing, and to create art for the project site; with Jon Olson to conduct <br /> workshops on reuse of old appliances; and with Loretta Nussbaum to conduct <br /> Keiki Kraft reuse workshops. Eighteen workshops were conducted, nine for adults <br /> and nine for keiki, with a total attendance of 203 adults and 52 keiki. According to <br /> Recycle Hawai`i's project coordinator, many requests were received from persons <br /> desiring to conduct workshops at KRRC. He estimates about 90 percent of the <br /> requests related to recycling. <br /> 7 <br /> <br />
