',. <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 445 14 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING HAWAII ISLAND LEGISLATORS TO REQUEST A <br /> $400,000 GRANT FROM THE HAWAII INVASIVE SPECIES COUNCIL TO THE <br /> DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION TO RESEARCH METHODS TO <br /> CONTROL THE SPREAD OF THE LITTLE FIRE ANT. <br /> WHEREAS,the little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, is an invasive species that is <br /> spreading throughout Hawaii; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Hawai`i County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hawai`i <br /> Ant Lab are working on a pilot project to control the spread of the little fire ant in County <br /> beaches and parks; and <br /> WHEREAS, the pilot project investigates different insecticides and application methods <br /> to develop a treatment strategy that is safe and effective; and <br /> WHEREAS, this project will distribute information about preventing the spread of the <br /> little fire ant to all landowners, including private citizens, businesses, the State, the federal <br /> government, and county governments throughout Hawaii; and <br /> WHEREAS, without funds to continue and expand the project across Hawaii Island, <br /> County beaches and parks will be overrun with the little fire ant; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Hawaii Invasive Species Council awards grants to support invasive <br /> species prevention, control, research, and outreach projects; and <br />
