REQUEST: <br /> Prepare a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an articulation agreement with the University of <br /> Hawaii , Hawai`i Community College. <br /> B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br /> The Hawaii Community College Fire Science Program prepares students with the academic knowledge for <br /> entry employment in the Fire Service field. Upon completion of the program, students have the knowledge to <br /> prepare for a career with federal, state and local fire and emergency service agencies with emphasis on <br /> Structural Fire Fighting, Wildland Fire Suppression, Hazardous Materials Incidents, Fire Prevention and <br /> Investigation, Fire Management and Administration, and the Incident Command System. Fire Science <br /> faculty teach students according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the National Wildfire <br /> Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. <br /> The Hawaii Fire Department is responsible for fire protection and suppression, pre-hospital emergency <br /> medical services, land and sea search and rescue, hazardous materials response, ocean safety, and fire <br /> prevention and public education for the County of Hawaii. HFD Firefighters are trained according to NFPA <br /> standards. <br /> The purpose of the articulation agreement is to facilitate the process of awarding college credit for college- <br /> level learning received during training in the County of Hawaii, Hawaii Fire Department. Moreoever, through <br /> this agreement students will have the opportunity to reduce the potential problem of having to retake similar <br /> courses, reduce the time it will take to complete a degree and reduce the amount of tuition and potential debt <br /> students incur in pursuit of a college certificate of degree. <br /> f.� MAY 2 ; 2015 <br /> SIGNED: DATE: <br /> Department Head <br />
