REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC WORKS AND <br /> PARKS AND RECREATION <br /> DATE: November 1, 2016 Re: Comm.No. 1140/Res.No. 705-16 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 11:40 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation,to which was referred <br /> Resolution No. 705-16, reports as follows: <br /> Resolution No. 705-16,transmitted by Council Member Daniel K. Paleka, Jr., via Communication <br /> No. 1140 dated October 14, 2016, requests the Department of Parks and Recreation to minimize the <br /> use of plastic water bottles by installing water bottle filling stations at County of Hawai`i Parks and <br /> Recreation facilities island wide. <br /> The resolution requests the departments of Water Supply and Public Works to assist as necessary <br /> with the installation of the water bottle filling stations. <br /> Council Member Paleka,who spoke in support of Resolution No. 705-16, stated that this was a <br /> recommendation that was supported by the Hawai`i Island Packaging Sustainability Initiative <br /> Stakeholders Task Force and is limited to Parks and Recreation facilities. He added that the <br /> resolution does not have any funding attached to it. <br /> Council Member Wille informed the Council that this resolution is "watered down" from what was <br /> originally recommended by the task force. She noted that it was recommended that this be done in <br /> all departments rather than just starting with Parks and Recreation facilities. <br /> Several Council Members expressed their support and shared their input and concerns.
