Outreach Coordinator 1984—1985 <br /> Hawai'i County Office of Economic Opportunity Hilo,Hawai'i <br /> Responsibilities for this position included setting up a support center for displaced Puna <br /> Sugar Company Workers.Services offered included basic education and career <br /> counseling, resume and job application preparation, assistance in locating and securing <br /> employment, as well as referrals to various county, state,federal or private agencies. <br /> In October 1985,contracted by the Hawaii County Department of Research and <br /> Development to prepare for publication a report on the programs and activities <br /> developed to assist the displaced Puna Sugar Company workers (available upon <br /> request). <br /> Employee Relations/Safety Supervisor 1976—1984 <br /> Puna Sugar Company, Limited Keaau, Hawai'i <br /> Responsibilities for this raw sugar manufacturer included processing of new employees, <br /> design and implementation of a safety and health program,facilitation of joint safety <br /> committee meetings, investigation and processing of all industrial accidents and liability <br /> claims,conducting in-house safety inspections to insure compliance with OSHA/DOSH <br /> Regulations,coordination of social functions, and maintenance of personnel files and <br /> records. <br /> Also responsible for the technical planning and initiation of safety awareness seminars <br /> and campaigns.This entailed the organization of safety quality teams among the 500 <br /> personnel of Puna Sugar Company.As a certified technician with the American Red <br /> Cross, conducted courses in accident prevention and first aid. Initiated a Safety Awards <br /> Program in an effort to alleviate the misuse of workers' compensation benefits. <br /> Results:After the initiation planning of the Safety Awards Program and courses in <br /> January 1981, accident claims decreased by 30.74%in the first year, and 49.77%in the <br /> second year. <br />
