BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): First responders such as police, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are the first people to be called into action when public safety is threatened. These brave men and women are proud of their occupations and their efforts to prevent crime and improve the quality of life in their communities. Safety is already a significant concern that contributes to stress for first responder families. The home monitoring device (Canary device)---to be given to the firefighters---is a stand-alone unit that allows the user to simply plug the monitoring device into an outlet, download an app on a smart phone, and receive updates on activities in that room. Users can,not only see everything happening in that room on their phone but also hear what is happening, receive alerts when there is movement in the room, and even receive alerts when there are changes in air quality (fire), humidity (water), and temperature in that room. The home monitoring service is free with the basic package and there are no fees to sign-up the device.
