REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE, WATER AND <br /> ENERGY SUSTAINABILITY <br /> DATE: August 21, 2018 Re: Communication No. 1028 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 9:06 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Agriculture, Water and Energy Sustainability, to which was referred <br /> Communication No. 1028, reports as follows: <br /> Communication No. 1028, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated August 3, 2018, nominates George <br /> Donev of Council District 9 to the County of Hawai`i Game Management Advisory Commission. <br /> Motion to approve nomination of George Donev was made by Council Member Eoff; seconded by <br /> Council Chair Poindexter. <br /> As introduced by Mr. Dennis Kauka, Jr., Aide to Executive Assistant for Mayor Harry Kim,Nominee <br /> Donev is a first year college student at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo studying mathematics and <br /> computer science, and he is a 2017 honors graduate of Hawai`i Preparatory Academy. Mr. Kauka <br /> further added that Nominee Donev was not affiliated with any political party. <br /> It is important to note that although not mentioned in Communication No. 1028 nor discussed during <br /> meeting, Mayor Kim's office has advised Chair Richards that if confirmed Nominee Donev would fill a <br /> term ending on December 31, 2023. <br /> Nominee Donev thanked the Council for the opportunity to serve and shared some of his background. <br /> His family is from Bulgaria, but he was raised in Los Angeles and has lived in the County of Hawai`i for <br /> the past 6 years. During his time here he has been active in his community volunteering at Waimea <br /> Community Park, the Kohala Watershed Partnership doing rainforest restoration, and the Hawai`i Ocean <br /> Film Festival, etc. His grandparents were environmental managers in Eastern Europe, and during trips <br /> back to Bulgaria, he has been on many hunting expeditions being instilled with the focus of <br /> environmental protection. He hopes to bring a youthful perspective to the commission based in a <br /> scientific framework engaging with the island's lands, animals and natural resources. <br /> Committee Chair Richards thanked Nominee Donev for his willingness to serve, and provided his <br /> support stating that Nominee Donev may be young, however comes with a mature sense of conversation <br /> and understanding of the island hunting and gaming lifestyle, and will be an interesting perspective and <br /> balance, needed on this commission. Chair Richards advised that due to Nominee Donev's appearance <br /> and approval today, it is not required for him to attend the upcoming confirmation Council meeting. <br /> AWESC Report No. 6 <br />
