I firmly believe that visitors to our island leave with a truer understanding of the Hawaiian
Paniolo experience after staying at Puakea Ranch. As realistic it is to expect we will return to
the days of the sugar cane industry, I believe it is unrealistic that anyone could think a cattle
ranch or a farm could be self-sustaining on Puakea Ranch and generate enough income to
properly care for those old homes and the land itself. According to historical record, generations
ago cattle ranching, sugarcane and even pineapples were cultivated on the ranch itself or on the
adjacent acreage all with short lived success or none at all.
The County relies on tourism. It takes a great deal of income to pay employees and maintain
property, and I believe Christie's desire to hold events on her property would allow her to
maintain Puakea Ranch in a manner that would make the North Kohala community and those
who dwelt there in the past proud. I believe Christie's vision for Puakea Ranch is the highest
and best use of that land.
Even though my wife and I are retired who designated North Kohala as a retirement community.
If you dig through the history books a little, you'll see North Kohala is anything but, I'm concern
that the few that are opposed are ignoring more and different to the employment needs of the
local communities like Haw! and Kapa`au. I urge you to grant whole Christie Cash's application
for a Use permit for Puakea Ranch. Thank you.
CARR SMITH: Thank you Carl, any questions from the Commissioners? Seeing none, thank
you very much, appreciate your testimony you can drop off the call please. Elizabeth Bove how
are you doing? Elizabeth?
BOVE: Can you hear me now?
CARR SMITH: Yes, that's sounds better. Go ahead, thank you.
BOVE: Wonderful. My name is Elizabeth Bove and I've been "- - -"permit because it will
provide more jobs to locals in the "- - -" especially now as to how many business "- - -" list
CARR SMITH: You're breaking up and you might. Go ahead Elizabeth if you can try to wrap
up.
BOVE: Sure.
CARR SMITH: You're in and out I was going to just let it go but your more out than in at this
point.
BOVE:
CARR SMITH: Thank you very much Elizabeth.
