COMMUNITIES OF CONCERN When analyzing the residing zip codes of motorists involved in fatal traffic crashes, it was found that the majority (87%) of those involved are residents of Hawaii Island (see Figure 4). This means that fatal traffic crashes have a reverberating impact throughout the community, affecting family, friends, and neighbors of those who fell victim to these senseless traffic deaths. Delving further into the data on the race of the deceased, it was found that Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are three times more likely to be killed on Hawai'i Island roads than whites (see Figure 5). Map 1 identifies the cumulative residing zip codes of the Hawaii Island resident drivers involved in a fatal traffic crash between the years 2013 and 2019. Included on the map are the location of all fatal traffic crashes during that time period. Communities of concern and the location of available police stations and hospitals have been delineated as well. FIGURE 4.
