manicured lawn area. Various mature pine species dot the lawn and line the paved <br /> driveway along with other foliage including monstera, as well as several varieties of <br /> ginger and palms. Plants surrounding the barn include money tree, various citrus, trees, <br /> avocado, hibiscus, lily of the Nile, and other weedy ground covers. Trees near the ranch <br /> house include a mixture of mature pine species, a row of paperbark trees,podocarpus, <br /> royal palms, and small stands of guava, in addition to various palm trees, monstera, <br /> asparagus ferns and sword ferns. According to the applicants, the likelihood of any rare <br /> or endangered species, habitat or flora on the property is remote. According to the State <br /> Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) <br /> the Hawaiian Hawk, State listed Blackburn's Sphinx Moth, State listed Hawaiian Goose <br /> (Nene) and State listed Hawaiian Hoary Bat may occur in the project vicinity. DOFAW <br /> also provided recommendations to mitigate impacts on these species. <br /> 17. Cultural and Archeological Resources: An Archaeological Inventory Survey (AIS) <br /> was conducted for the property by ASM Affiliates (ASM)in June 2021. As a result of the <br /> fieldwork, no historic properties of any kind were identified within the property. <br /> Additionally, the applicant states that there are no specific valued historical resources <br /> currently present within the property. The survey does identify several traditional cultural <br /> practices that formerly took place in the general vicinity of the property and eight natural <br /> resources. According to the survey, Pu`u Maile lies in the northeastern corner of the <br /> project area and Pu`u Manu lies just south of the project area. Pu`u have been recognized <br /> as areas of importance in the Kohala region for hundreds of years "as they were not only <br /> a part of the cultural landscape but were used as landmarks spanning from historic events <br /> that occurred to personal connections."Past cultural practices identified in the survey <br /> were bird hunting, agriculture, and ranching. Prior to ranching and the deforestation of <br /> the area, native birds were commonly harvested for subsistence and artistic purposes, <br /> particularly to create royal insignia with feathers. The report concludes that the proposed <br /> action would have no direct impacts on the practice of bird hunting or traditional <br /> agricultural practices or associated agricultural features. No impacts are anticipated to <br /> Pu`u Maile as the current proposed action does not include construction at the pu`u. The <br /> applicant has stated that they will also incorporate cultural and historical education into <br /> -4- <br />
