VITOUSEK: Yes <br /> DEFRANCO: Is there off-the-grid options now to charging butteries like solar? <br /> MORIN: Yeah, so the charging systems need access to energy, and there is the option to, you <br /> know, plug into the grid, which is the most common, but there are also the options for microgrids <br /> or for—and there is actually a good example at the community college here in Hilo where you've <br /> got a solar canopy, so it's a solar panel array, that tracks the sun. There is a battery system that's <br /> hooked up to it, and you can actually charge your car there. So that system is totally grid <br /> independent. So there are those solutions as well. I will say that they are more costly because <br /> you now have the need for, you know, the equipment and the batteries, but they may also be an <br /> acceptable solution where there is no infrastructure. So thinking about, you know, up on Saddle <br /> Road, for example, that might be ideal where you've got a lot of sun and you don't have the grid <br /> infrastructure required for charging, you can pop those up there and that could also work. So it's <br /> just one additional type of solution that we can avail of. <br /> KIMBALL: And I should mention that the charger that is associated with that solar canopy is <br /> the same charger that you'll see in the parking lot at Walmart hooked up to the grid. It's the <br /> identical technology. <br /> VITOUSEK: Okay. So it was Recommendation 8 on clarifying the conflict between number of <br /> parking stalls required for each EV versus each plug on an EV charger. And what was the <br /> resolution to that, that was recommended? <br /> KIMBALL: So what, yeah, so just—I'm sorry, am I interrupting? Go ahead, Director or <br /> KAY: Oh, no, I was this is ChristianI was just going to address that. Yeah, so there was a <br /> clarification that it's number of plugs per parking space, not number of chargers per parking <br /> space. And I think I understand your question maybe as, if there are multiple plug options on a <br /> single charger, but there's maybe only two power lines going to juice those plugs <br /> VITOUSEK: Correct. <br /> KAY: you want the number of lines to be the ability to charge the number of vehicles that <br /> come out of the charger, not the number of possible plug-ups. So it's a semantic thing that I'm <br /> seeing. So <br /> VITOUSEK: Yeah. <br /> KAY: so that's what you want to clarify. Did you hear that, Councilmember Kimball? <br /> KIMBALL: I did, and I'll have to think about the language of that. So, I mean, the typical <br /> development for the infrastructure would be you would have one line coming from wherever <br /> your power box is and then out to the charging location, and then you could have multiple <br /> chargers at that location.
