There is a <br />need to put a management plan in place, when the area is opened up, the <br />impact on the property will greatly increase. Today we deal with squatters, <br />eradicating invasive species, hauling trash, while trying to hold education <br />programs and work days with local schools, such as Pahoa High School, <br />Haas, and Kamehameha. <br /> <br />As for the management plan, Ms. Ward asked for more information about the <br />contractor and costs. Ms. Kon replied that they have contacted Aina, LLC who <br />is familiar with parts of the property, Nohopapa Hawai’i, and another company <br />(didn’t say). She is presently working with Ms. Cutler regarding the specifics <br />of the scope and hasn’t chosen a company yet. As for the cost, it’s just a <br />rough estimate to build a steering committee to include consultants from <br />cultural practitioners, members of the community, marine biologist, <br />hydrogeologists, and water stone. She explains her childhood connection to <br />the property and the marine life in the ponds. The cost is to help get <br />information from these consultants to build the scope for the management <br />plan. <br /> <br />To help define the roots of the scope of the organization plans for the <br />property, Ms. Ripley testified the costs to create the steering committee. <br />Ms. Chang stated the management plan is priority, are you looking into <br />archeological and botanical surveys? Ms. Kon confirms that there is little <br />known information about the property and working with the county for <br />surveys, lineal descendants, and historical information. She agrees <br />management is priority for proper management of this property. She states <br />she does not want to do something that is not right. It is a huge task, but <br />willing to take on the challenge, the land needs stewarding, educating the <br />people who use the lands, and visitors. <br /> <br />Ms. Chang confirmed that she agreed that the management plan needs to be <br />prioritized and would like to make a motion. <br /> <br />MOTION: Ms. Chang moved that a decision on Stewardship Application STU. 23- <br />06 be deferred until the next special meeting, to give the applicant the <br />opportunity to focus on the long-term management plan that needs to be done <br />and to submit the budget details for what you think it would cost to do a long-term <br />management plan. The motion was seconded by Ms. Ward. Chr. Kelepolo <br />opened the floor for discussion. <br /> <br />Ms. Ward asked if they can do all this in the next month. Chr.
