During large rain events, debris carried by stormwater is
known to clog the primary drainage inlet causing flows to overtop the
drainage system and flow onto the roadway. This overflow has triggered a
washout of the access road and adjacent drainage way slopes. The proposed "f
miscellaneous improvements included the diversion of runoff into an
infiltration basin, the design of overflow protection drainage intakes for the ...
infiltration basin, grates to protect the primary inlet from debris, slope
stabilization, and repairs to one section of the existing concrete drainage
swales.
Project Highlights:
To mitigate debris blockage of the drainage intake and reduce flows to the Completion of design and
primary drainage inlet, E2 designed diversion structures along the existing construction of storm drain
concrete drainage swale to route stormwater and debris into an infiltration intake modifications to mitigate
basin. The diversion structures allow stormwater to enter the infiltration debris in runoff, increase overall
basin, even in the event of heavy debris build-up at the primary drainage capacity of the existing drainage
inlet. An overflow structure was designed downstream of the diversion to system, and reduce and slow
allow stormwater from the infiltration basin back into the existing concrete large flows to the primary
swale system to the primary drainage inlet. An elevated perforated drainage drainage inlet to prevent
intake pipe was also designed as a secondary overflow protection measure. overtopping of the storm
This intake pipe is located within the infiltration basin to collect stormwater drainage system.
overflow with minimal potential impacts from debris and prevent
overtopping of the drainage way. Other major improvements included New drainage improvements
riprap stabilization of drainage way slopes. were designed to be integrated
E2 prepared construction documents, plans and specifications, and a into the existing storm drainage
construction cost estimate. Due to initial funding concerns for construction, system, while more effectively
the design was broken up into a base bid and two additive alternatives to utilizing the existing infiltration
allow for phased construction. The final construction bid included all phases basin.
of the proposed work except for the additive alternative consisting of
repairs to the existing concrete drainage swale. Construction was completed Innovative elevated perforated
in early 2018. drainage intake pipe was
`• designed.
Cost: $60,000.
<Before
After>
25.
