The -=
reconstruction of the existing 2-mile gravity sewer
system was also in response to spills observed during Z s '
heavy rainfall events. Work was separated into , +TM_ _, „ 7,, "'"
various stages, including an initial assessment and
schematic design of the entire system. The final a
design and construction services were separated into *w -- '
three phases along the existing 2-mile system. '
Project Scope: Element Environmental, LLC (E2) , role- ~'o .
jihi
was tasked with completing the initial assessment, schematic design, planning, design, and preparation of
construction documents for all phases of reconstruction/replacement of the existing sewer line.
The initial assessment included cleaning and closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection of the entire sewer system,
in accordance with the Pipeline Assessment Certification Program, as well as manhole inspections. E2 then
completed the schematic design, which included assessing sewer line deficiencies from the historic spill and CCTV
inspection data, developing rehabilitation/replacement alternatives, preparing schematic drawings for the
recommended alternatives, and preparing a cost estimate for the recommended improvements. Major deficiencies
that were identified in the system included deteriorated pipes, offset joints, and root intrusion.
Rehabilitation/replacement alternatives that were considered included slip lining, cured-in-place pipe, pipe
bursting, and open-trench repair and replacement. Design sewer flows were calculated based on current and
future planned uses at the Botanical Gardens.
Upon acceptance of the recommended improvements, E2 completed construction documents for each phase of
work (i.e., plans, specifications, and estimated construction costs) and is currently providing services during
construction for Phases II and III.
Project Highlights:
• Completed cleaning and CCTV inspection of the 2-mile gravity sewer system.
• Developed rehabilitation/replacement alternatives for the gravity sewer system.
• Calculating current and future design flows for the system based on planned future uses for the
Botanical Gardens.
Cost: $840,000.
23.
