Need <br />West Hawaii District oversees 23 public hunting areas covering over 250,000 acres. Many of the popular <br />hunting areas are found within the island's rain shadow and receive a very limited amount of rainfall. <br />There are over 60 wildlife guzzlers scattered throughout these arid Hunting areas and many are in <br />disrepair and need to be replaced or renovated. Exclosures, boundary and informational signs, roads, <br />fences, facilities, and hunter checking stations need to be inspected and maintained. <br />B. Objectives <br />Operate and maintain facilities and infrastructure in 23 public hunting areas in order to support <br />wildlife management activities and provide wildlife oriented recreation opportunities to the people <br />of Hawaii. <br />C. Expected Results and Benefits <br />Maintaining existing improvements within the hunting areas will facilitate wildlife restoration <br />efforts for game and non -game animals which in turn provide safe and high quality recreational <br />opportunities for hunters and non -hunters alike. <br />D.
