In the 1970s,the U.S. k! „N, r7'' <br /> Fish and Wildlife Service(USFWS)acquired the old �s <br /> fishpond and the surrounding area(44 acres)and <br /> established the Kakahaia National Wildlife Refuge. More <br /> recently, an 'aina-based non-profit organization, Ka Ipu " <br /> Makani, identified Loko Kakahai'a as the focus of one of its <br /> initiatives to foster community stewardship, practice, and • <br /> restoration.
