community about coming together and getting the students back in school because the
school serves breakfast and lunch. School is a stable environment for students from
th
kindergarten to 12 grade. She suggested doing an educational campaign/event just to
tell the community what is going on.
J. Balberde-Kamalii mentioned that Hilo High School’s profile shows that 30 percent of
the students live in single family, female headed household. Also, a majority of the
students are on free or reduced lunch. She was looking for support for these families in
terms of resources that are available as well as trying to find counseling/support
services that can be offered at a reduced rate. Funding is needed to create information
packets of numbers for people to call.
K. Nova felt that CSW is not allowed to provide money to individual families.
C. Ka-ipo suggested that CSW do a factual, hard hitting awareness spot on the radio
and in the newspaper to get attention. J. Balberde-Kamalii said that CSW should
generate some kind of “talk story” interview or radio spot that highlight this community
issue.
K. Schneider said people want to help, but how would we know how to get to certain
groups or families to help them? How can community groups help people in the
community because people want to do that, but they don’t know how? There are many
church groups that really want to help.
E. Cabatu mentioned that Women’s Health Week is coming up in May. Women also
make the health care decisions of the family.
C. Kitaoka expressed concern that printing of a booklet will not be completed by the end
of the school year. In addition, approval is needed with the Complex Area
Superintendents in order to send information home from the schools. She didn’t feel
that this project will happen this fiscal year. C. Ka-ipo felt that awareness should be
done first before sending any type of information home.
CSW decided to focus on Women’s Health Week in May by doing radio spots.
C. Ka-ipo and E. Cabatu will work on the script. The cost of the radio spots will be
approximately $1,600 which will be aired on all the major radio stations. The committee
would like Kat from KWXX to do the spot and C. Ka-ipo would like prominent women in
the community to do different spots relating to health.
C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the treasurer’s report. C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The
motion was passed.
STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC
None.
2
