Mejia and D. Pung will work together on the display board and have it ready for <br />display at the essay contest awards ceremony. <br />C. Kitaoka asked by telephone if CSW wanted to participate in an event on Oahu in <br />April and put up the committee’s display board. She will obtain more information and <br />report back to the committee. <br />3.Essay Contest <br />C. Kitaoka submitted three questions for the committee to answer regarding how to <br />award prizes, changing the prizes from savings bonds to gift cards, and a questionable <br />th <br />essay written by a 12 grade student. <br />J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that C. Kitaoka contact the principal, grade counselor, <br />and guidance counselor at the school regarding the student’s essay. Members <br />discussed whether to provide an award to the student. C. Kitaoka agreed to contact <br />the principal of the student’s school. <br />After some discussion, D. Pung moved to award only for this one time two additional <br />thth <br />honorable mention prizes for the 5/6 grade category because there were many <br />thth <br />more entries and there were no entries for the 9/10 grade category. A. Mejia <br />seconded the motion. The motion was passed. <br />After some discussion on changing the prizes, C. Ka-ipo moved to give gift cards <br />instead of savings bonds to the winners and honorable mention. CSW decided to <br />purchase Borders gift cards because it’s educational and accessible on both sides of <br />the island. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed. <br />2 <br /> <br />
