C. Kitaoka stated that she saw a teacher from Kealakehe Intermediate School
and told her about the essay contest which was already done. In order to spark
interest from the teacher and the school next year, C. Kitaoka offered one winner
from her class a prize. The prize could be a $25 gift card for one student and
also allow the teacher to attend the awards luncheon. The teacher will
acknowledge the student in class, but the winner will not be part of the contest.
After some discussion, C. Kitaoka moved to give a $25 gift card to one student
and that CSW pay for the teacher’s lunch and allow her to attend the luncheon.
A. Mejia seconded the motion. M. Sherman questioned why CSW would not
allow the student to attend as well. C. Kitaoka responded that the student cannot
be acknowledged and the student’s essay will not be included in the booklet
because they missed the deadline. The motion was passed.
K. Peters suggested that CSW distribute the essay contest packet to the
sophomore and junior college counselors for next year. C. Kitaoka added that
she got a fifth grade teacher from Kona as a judge to get her interested and
hopefully get more participation from West Hawaii once she sees the luncheon.
4. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
A. Mejia reported that C. Ka-ipo provided information about having the Women’s
Hall of Fame at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort. C. Ka-ipo had expressed her
desire to hold the event one year in Hilo to see how many people would come
out. If there is not a good turnout, then CSW should continue to hold the event at
the Hilton Waikoloa Village, Water’s Edge Ballroom. Since there were not
enough members present to make a decision, the committee agreed to table this
issue.
5. Equal Pay
K. Peters reported that she will contact E. Cabatu to see whether other
organizations would like to co-sponsor a radio ad on equal pay with CSW.
Suggested groups are AAUW, Soroptimist, Zonta Club, Business Professional
Women, Lions Club, Rotary, and Toastmasters.
B. Health
1. Women’s Health Month
K. Nova reported that she would like to do a workshop/seminar in Kona and
maybe in Waimea on what people can do to manage their stress during these
disastrous times from a psychological perspective. After her presentation, she
would like to have an independent financial planner from the West Coast to
answer concerns such as how to interpret what is really going on when you are
hearing all these things from the media (what to look for and what to not pay
attention to) and how to formulate questions if you are going to talk to your own
financial planner. The financial planner will be on Maui with his family for spring
break and he is willing to come over on March 28, 2009 or April 4, 2009. The
workshop will be held after 1 p.m. at a determined location. She would like CSW
3
