As ofJanuary 1, 2009, there were 8,834 households on <br />the waiting list for federal low -rent public housing statewide. (Households on the public housing <br />wait list may also be on the wait list for Section 8 tenant -based assistance.) The State and each of the four counties administer Section 8 <br />tenant -based assistance programs and maintain waiting lists for the program. In 2009, <br />approximately 17,020families were on the waiting lists statewide.
