We are so thankful for the outstanding dedication and
commitment of these Senior Advisory Board members. Without them the amazing activities that take
place at the senior centers all around the island simply could not exist. Mahalo for your aloha and kokua!

SENIOR COMPANIONS TOUCHING LIVES!
East Hawai‘i Senior Companions gathered recently for a special training by Ho‘opono, an
agency that focuses on rehabilitation and services for the blind. Ms. Carol Mau and Ms. Carol Fujimoto
provided valuable information on how to best assist individuals who are visually impaired. This
new knowledge will help the Senior Companions in their volunteer work with their senior clients.

“We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw

SUGGESTIONS FROM MEDICARE PATROL
Protect yourself from Medicare errors, fraud, and abuse by being proactive. Some tips from the
Medicare Patrol website:

• Treat your Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security numbers like a credit card number.

• Do not carry your Medicare or Medicaid card unless you will need it. Only take it to doctor’s appointments, visits to your hospital/clinic or trips to the pharmacy.

• Record doctor’s visits, tests, and procedures in your personal care journal or calendar.

• Be alert to people who claim to know how to bill Medicare to get payment even if an item or service is not covered.

For more tips, you can visit the Hawai‘i ADRC - website at www.hawaiiadrc.org/site/437/ senior_medicare_patrol.aspx.

Kupuna News 2 Information and Assistance (808) 961-8777
