Get more establishments like KTA for more jobs. We need KTA here in Pahoa. Malama prices
are so expensive
There are not enough jobs in the area to support the population. It has gotten better in the last
10 years, but there are people that want to work and cannot. There is also a big problem with
the county and state about setting up a business or acquiring property to build a business. It
seems that only the rich are able to set up business. There needs to be more land dedicated to
building business and creating an economic opportunity for our people. Many cities in the USA
provide subsidies and tax breaks to business that develop in economically challenged areas. I
would like to see the Pahoa area develop incentives to business and economic growth.
Especially in light of the energy and gasoline prices. I think people would love to spend their
money in their own community.
If businesses come in they need to be required to put in sidewalks, landscaping and
architectural guidelines
More restaurants!
Would like to see co -ops encouraged.
Businesses that include communications via satellite could be an adjunct to the tourist business
and provide jobs to locals that could span to the mainland and the rest of the world from Pahoa
Making Pahoa self contained, meaning no need go to Hilo for everything, would help increase
jobs. Also encourage agriculture. Start job programs for welfare recipients and give them a job
in ag, food prep, childcare. provide childcare. Set up a big daycare center in pahoa.
Essential to keeping things local and minimizing the HWY 130 gridlock would be development of
economic incubators, more office space and the ability to create a village that truly welcomed
people. (Sidewalks, non - motorized zones, etc.)
LET US BRING IN SOME GREEN INDUSTRIES (SOLAR)
Pahoa should be a major tourist attraction... but it's not even on the list. It's a treasure of old
time Hawaiian life that visitors should be supporting and enjoying
The county creates roadblocks for new businesses versus promoting development of businesses
in the community.
Could be better, but, please no more fast food, limit gas stations, etc. Pahoa town could use a
face lift to attract more businesses. There are so many artistic persons in this area, shops for
them to sell, or, maybe a larger area store with stalls for individual vendors
Employment and economic activity Page 5
