Need a community building for employment training opportunities and a small business
incubator.
Some good stuff if you're a farmer, well capitalized, or a self starter. Otherwise, not so many
jobs are available, a shame that some storefronts remain empty, employee -less. But the answer
is not more non -local retail and fast food development, but a comprehensive plan to incentivize
entrepreneurial ventures. Small business planning and fundraising skills, budgeting and
accounting, cooperative marketing and development of local timeshare are all workshops and
classes that could be taught locally, relevant to Pahoa's and Puna's realities. Ongoing local
economic development classes, forums and learning communities could help create a strong,
local economy that's not at the mercy of the global economy.
An opportunity is here to support independent retailers and restrict mega stores from the
metro center.
There is not much out there. Encourage more farmers markets open during week ... a good
venue for families to earn and to save on shopping.
I would love to see a Costco in the Mountain View /Kurtistown area. It would create a lot of jobs
and provide low cost groceries /misc. goods /gas and other services.
What tvne of Business should Pahoa try to attract
Very few can find jobs and when they do come up like Kentucky Fried Chicken, very poor choice
for our health conscious community!
We don't want big business in the area that would bring employment in - we need to stay as a
bedroom community of Hilo
In my opinion, there should be more office space, so people will do business in Pahoa instead of
driving to Hilo.
Local opportunities come thru small business only. Commuters must need help figuring out
how to ride - share, judging from the small response to the free parking at Makuu Market.
no more big box stores in Pahoa!
Employment and economic activity Page 6
