Hawai‘i Police Commission <br />Regular Session Minutes <br />December 21, 2012 <br />Page 2 <br />POLICE CHIEF’S WRITTEN REPORTS <br />Crime Report <br /> <br />Assistant Chief Tavares summarized the written report. Up to November 30, 2012, <br />there were 3,719 serious crimes, of these, the Area I and Area II Criminal <br />investigation Units investigated 943 cases. For the month of November, the <br />department received 7,489 calls for service. 2,409 calls were for criminal and traffic. <br />5,080 calls were for miscellaneous public assistance. <br /> <br />For crime trends, burglaries in the Hilo District continues. The Special Enforcement <br />Unit continues to put pressure on the core groups of individuals that they believe are <br />responsible for these burglaries. They continue to develop informants, follow leads, <br />and have presence in pawnshops. In Puna, they have seen a decre <br />burglaries, although they continue with police presence in the subdivisions. Kona <br />has experienced a significant decrease in burglaries. This has been since the arrest <br />of 17 individuals for burglaries and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. <br /> <br />The sex assault number for Hmkua was the result of a Grand Jury indictment <br />where additional cases were initiated for the same individual and incident. <br /> <br />Traffic Report <br /> <br />Assistant Chief Kealoha reported that for the month of November, a total of 4,278 <br />citations were issued: 2,942 moving/regulatory, 302 seatbelt, 53 child restraint, and <br />981 speeding. There were no trends for the month. <br /> <br />Personnel report on vacancies, recruitment, training, promotions, <br /> <br />reallocations, severance from service, and work assignments <br /> <br />Assistant Chief Kanehailua reported having 21 vacancies. The Police Officer I <br />recruitment test was administered. They received 713 applications, 475 took the <br />written test, and 269 passed. The agility test will be given ne <br />class will start in the beginning of the next fiscal year. They completed the <br />sergeantÓs promotions. <br />Finance report of budget and expenditures <br /> <br />AC Kanehailua stated that they are still in the review stage of their budget. They <br />th <br />received CALEA accreditation for three years. They were the 100 agency to be <br />accredited. Vice Chair Ignacio went on record to acknowledge all the work they did <br />during the accreditation process. Chair Ono congratulated them. <br /> <br />Commendations of sworn and civilian employees <br /> <br />Deputy Chief Ferreira reported that the Chief was on vacation. They received nine <br />commendations since the last commission meeting. They are still working on their <br />phone call messaging system. Assistant Chief Kanehailua stated that their <br />administrative staff will be looking into security of the Police CommissionÓs office. <br /> <br />
