Cultural and historical features and sites are protected from destruction by <br /> development. <br /> 2. Historic structures and cultural sites significant to Volcano's history and cultural <br /> traditions are preserved. <br /> 3. Design character and natural setting of the older neighborhoods representative of <br /> Volcano's historic development are perpetuated. <br /> 4. Tourism remains compatible with historical and natural resources and not intrusive to <br /> the community. <br /> Objectives: <br /> 1. Educate the public about features and structures of historical and cultural significance in <br /> Volcano, including archaeological remains (e.g. charcoal kilns), homes and homesteads, <br /> trails, vegetation, building interiors, photographs, letters, books, significant people, etc., <br /> and about the cultural significance of the native forest. <br /> 2. Work with innkeepers and other hospitality workers to promote the natural, historic, <br /> and landscape values of Volcano. <br /> 3. Coordinate education and preservation efforts of the Volcano Community Association, <br /> Volcano Community Foundation, and the Volcano Art Center. <br /> Actions: <br /> 1. Establish by ordinance a Volcano Village Historic District for the purpose of preserving <br /> the unique and mostly intact historic and rural character of the Village core. <br /> 2. Establish a Historic District Design Review Committee consisting of community and <br /> professional members, whose purpose is to ensure compliance with design and zone <br /> criteria and permitting laws of the Historic District. This committee will include an <br /> architect licensed to practice in Hawaii and qualified to evaluate historic structures, a <br /> certified land use planner, a resident member of the Volcano community <br /> knowledgeable in local plant and animal ecology, and a community member with a <br /> professional association with State and County Historic Preservation Bureaus. <br /> 24 <br />
