In August 2015, the department will once again be under review by <br />independent assessors to retain accreditation, which the department earned in November <br />2012. <br />Housing — Construction on Na Kahua Hale O Ulu Wini ("Ulu Wini", formerly known as <br />Kaloko Housing Program) located in North Kona continued through fiscal year 2014. <br />Completing construction of final 20 units for a total of 96 units for this project. Ulu Wini <br />provides transitional (short-term, less than two years) and permanent rental housing for <br />families with children earning below 50% of the County's adjusted median income, with <br />preference for those impacted by homelessness. Entire buildout of the site will include <br />96 two-bedroom units, a community center complete with meeting room administrative <br />offices, a laundry facility and kitchen, an employment training facility, a playground and <br />a wastewater treatment plant. Families engaged at Ulu Wini will be provided either <br />transitional or rental housing, case management, mail and computer access, and an array <br />of on-site support services including employment and life skills training, mental health <br />services, counseling and childcare. <br />Kamakoa Nui is a master planned community in Waikoloa that is intended to serve the <br />local work force population with affordable homes for purchase near the largest employer <br />on the Big Island, the Kohala Coast hotels. The first sales were recognized in this current <br />fiscal year with twelve homes sold. <br />For the Future <br />Public Safety — Securing funding for the South Kona Police Station continues to remain a <br />goal of the Hawai'i Police Department along with planning for a new station in the Puna <br />District to replace the soon to be retired Kea'au Police Station. <br />The Police Department has completed extensive research into the process of procuring a <br />modernized and fully integrated Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and records <br />Management System (RMS) to better serve the community and that system has been put <br />out for bid with the award expected to be announced in early 2015. Additionally, the <br />Police department is one of several County Departments that collaborated on <br />modernizing the County's Radio System which will be getting under way in late 2014. <br />Public Works — The Department of Public Works began reconstructing the four -lane <br />roadway and Pauahi Street/Kamehameha Avenue intersection, on March 3, 2014. <br />Estimated completion is mid -2015. The Federal Highway Administration is paying <br />eighty (80) percent of the $13 million estimated cost and the County the remaining <br />twenty (20) percent. <br />The following projects are in the design phase: <br />• Kawailani/Iwalani Intersection Improvement Project (STIP), <br />• Manono Street Improvements Project (STIP), <br />• Kapi'olani Street Extension Project, <br />• Alii Drive Shoulder Improvements Project, <br />• Komohana Street Reconstruction Project <br />• Henry Street Reconstruction Project. <br />-4- <br />
