Page 3
signed up, Pete Hendricks.
Could you please come forward? You can sit at the
table here, and be sure to press the microphone and introduce
yourself and anybody else who will be accompanying you.
MR. HENDRICKS: My name is Pete Hendricks. I'm the
Vice -Chair of the Police Commission. And with us today
we have two other commission members, Arthur Buckman and
Scotty Paiva, and our admin. person, Josie Pelayo, and our
corp. counsel, Malia Hall.
I would like to testify in favor of the intent of
the letter sent by former Chair Guy Schutte on December 16th,
2016, for the equitable salary structure being that the chief
and the deputy chief would be at the top of the pay scale in
the Police Department (SEE ATT. A).
Fortunately, we have a great chief. But over the
years, because of the inequity in salary structure, when
majors and assistant chiefs reach a certain number of years
and salary, they make more than the chief. So that a person
who's qualified by time and experience and performance very
often decides not to apply for chief when the time is right
when the chief retires.
And the details are to be worked out, of course, by
the Salary Commission. But I would like to strongly suggest
that this be done. To some extent that's the case with the
Fire Department, too. Thank you.
ISLAND COURT REPORTING & TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES
(808) 933-9800
