Page 23 <br />1 Hawaii are appointed attorneys. They serve at will, <br />2 purely at will. You can just come in after lunch one <br />3 day, and they'll just say, "Okay, pack up. I want you <br />4 out by tomorrow," and you have no rights to argue about <br />5 it; you just pack up and leave. <br />6 And that's where your County attorneys, both <br />7 prosecutors and corporation counsel -- that's the <br />8 status that they have. They have no work protection, <br />9 no civil -- civil rights -- sorry. We do have civil <br />10 rights, but no civil service protection. <br />11 We have several new attorneys, young <br />12 attorneys, and our young attorneys are not like our <br />13 old-time attorneys like Bill and Amy in that the new <br />14 attorneys -- and I think it's true of all work <br />15 forces -- they don't have the -- they don't have the <br />16 sense of tradition and history. Everything is <br />17 immediate for them. I'm not saying it's just <br />18 Millennials, but the X Generation, the Y Generation. <br />19 And they look at what is our pay, and when I told them, <br />20 "Well, the last time we got a pay raise was almost ten <br />21 years ago," each one of them thought I was joking. <br />22 They couldn't believe the last time we got an <br />23 across-the-board raise was about ten years ago. <br />24 So the issue comes up for them of -- some of <br />25 them have been here over a year, some of them less than <br />ISLAND COURT REPORTING & TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES <br />(808) 933-9800 <br />
