Page 25 <br />1 have hope. <br />2 I've already talked about the counties' <br />3 comparison. <br />And, yes, we <br />are officially number one; <br />4 we're the lowest <br />-paid county <br />attorneys in the State. <br />5 And that's <br />not something <br />we ever wanted to have; and it <br />6 sure makes <br />it hard to attract <br />attorneys. Like I said, <br />7 several attorneys, they -- <br />two of them have roots on <br />8 the island, <br />so they came <br />from the mainland; they came <br />9 back home. <br />But they also <br />have family members on other <br />10 islands, so when the discussion of pay raises or even <br />11 the topic of Salary Commission finally having a quorum <br />12 comes up, everybody starts looking again. Everybody <br />13 starts dusting off their resume. <br />14 The amount of time we invest -- Bill helped <br />15 with supervision; Amy was, I assume, before in the <br />16 office; I'm a supervisor now -- we invest a lot of time <br />17 and effort in training these new attorneys. You can <br />18 come in from outside to have -- you know, and have <br />19 <br />maybe six, <br />seven years' <br />experience. <br />And <br />that's <br />very <br />20 <br />preferable. <br />That's what <br />we usually <br />want. <br />But <br />county <br />21 <br />government <br />and <br />state -- county <br />government <br />is <br />very <br />22 <br />different <br />from <br />any other kind <br />of practice <br />of <br />law you'll <br />23 ever see anywhere. <br />24 So, that's all I would ask of you folks is <br />25 just give these guys some hope.
