Page 22
loads, Charlene Iboshi said, well, listen, we're going to
advertise nationally. And we did. We advertised nationally
for four positions, and for four vacancies we got three
applicants.
That doesn't mean that those applicants weren't
good. But one thing I remember in particular is the first
and I think the only interview that I ever sat in on was a
gentleman by the name of Donald Davidson, who we eventually
hired and became a very good lawyer for us. But during the
interview, Charlene Iboshi asked the standard question of,
given all the qualified applicants that we have, why should
we hire you? And I'm like, uh, because he's breathing and
has a bar license. That's good enough for me. That's the
only one that she asked me to sit in after that.
Every time that we go through this process, the
natural reaction is to say, well, what's Kauai getting, what
is Maui getting, what is Oahu getting, and how do we compare?
What we get from the public is that we are a poor County,
and we can't afford it. And basically my instincts say,
yeah, that's true. We are a poor County, relative to some of
the other counties. And we can't afford big bucks.
I'm here to suggest a different type of process
than just trying to say we're more like Maui than we are like
Oahu than we are like Kauai.
In 2008, which is a significant date for most of
ISLAND COURT REPORTING & TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES
(808) 933-9800
