<br />Regular Session Minutes <br />June 8, 2018 <br />Page 2 <br /> <br /> <br />Commissioner Carlson stated that if it is anonymous, it comes to the commission as <br />correspondence. The Chair and Vice Chair should decide how to handle it. Ms. Hall <br />stated that it would be part of the administrative duties of the Chair and Vice Chair. <br />No one wanted to add this into the rules. <br /> <br />HER COMMISSION ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS <br />Chair Hendricks thanked Commissioner Hu and the staff of the Courtyard Marriott King <br />Kamehameha Beach Hotel for their help with the State of H <br /> <br /> <br />REPORT ON DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES <br />Written reports were distributed and items highlighted: <br /> Crime Report: Assistant Chief Mitchell Kanehailua reported that up through May 31, <br />2018, there were 8,323 serious crimes. The Criminal Investigation Units <br />investigated 1,325 of those cases. Hilo had a decrease in auto thefts. Puna had an <br />increase in burglaries. There were a few arrests for looting in lower Puna, but not <br />the chaotic numbers seen on social media. Kona had an increase in auto thefts and <br />a decrease in burglaries. Hawaiian Ocean View Estates had an increase in <br />burglaries. Suspects have been identified, and they actively patrol the area. For the <br />month of May, they had 8,605 calls for services which was a 10% increase since the <br />start of the lava flow. <br /> <br />Commissioner Pasco stated that she has seen an increase in people in Kohala and <br />asked if they are lava evacuees. AC Kanehailua stated that according to the <br />Captain in Puna, evacuees have moved to Ko <br /> <br /> Traffic Report: for the month of May, 5,019 citations <br />were issued: 3,574 moving/regulatory, 344 seatbelt, 25 child restraint, and 1,076 <br />speeding. Year-to-date, there was a decrease in traffic fatalities over the previous <br />year. <br /> <br /> Personnel Report: Deputy Chief Bugado reported that by the end of the month, they <br />will have 12 sworn vacancies. Captain Ishii will be retiring. They anticipate more <br />thth <br />retirements in the next three months. The 87 and 88 recruitment classes are <br />ongoing. They have a target date of November 1 to start another class. Dispatch <br />has 5 vacancies. Two dispatchers are on extended leave, one is on intermittent <br />leave, and one took a downgrade to clerk in CALEA. Dispatch is a difficult job. <br />They are in an enclosed room dealing with irate people. They are waiting for <br />improvements to the dispatch center. Captains Burian and Jelsma will be promoted <br />made a conditional offer for a school crossing guard. <br /> <br />Chief Ferreira reported that improvements to the dispatch center is a capital <br />improvement project that has been identified by the administration.
