Getting people to work in 911 is a nationwide problem. <br />Repricing to a higher pay might help. Maui County has incentive pay for <br />dispatchers. Deputy Chief Bugado stated that they have had preliminary talks with <br />the community college to prepare applicants with skills for the job. <br /> <br />th <br />Chief Ferreira stated that the recognition ceremony for the 87 recruit class will be <br />on August 15. <br /> <br /> Finance Report: Chief Ferreira reported that almost 87% of their budget have been <br />expended. They had $635,000 extra expenditures due to the lava flow. Budget cuts <br />are being discussed. They will look at contract services. Autopsies are required for <br />unattended deaths, and this is a large expense. If furloughs are considered, it would <br />affect civilian staff, not sworn personnel. Puna officers are working 12-hour shifts <br />due to the lava flow. They have a supplemental budget that requests additional <br />personnel in dispatch, records, and patrol. <br /> <br /> Commendations of Sworn and Civilian Employees: They received four <br />commendations since the last meeting. <br /> <br /> Other Department Activities: The will be on June 20 in <br /> <br /> <br />EXECUTIVE SESSION (Closed session.) <br />Commissioner Carlson motioned to meet in executive session to consider discipline and <br />charges against officers or employees o where matters <br />affecting privacy will be involved, to consider sensitive matters relating to public safety, <br />and may consult with Corporation Counsel on questions and issues pertaining to the <br />to HRS 92- <br />5 (a) (2) (4) (6) and the Hawa-20 (b). Commissioner Hu <br />seconded, and it carried unanimously. Executive session convened at 9:50 a.m. <br /> <br />Regular session reconvened at 10:11 a.m. <br /> <br />ACTION ON EXECUTIVE SESSION MATTERS <br /> Complaint HPC 18-13: Complainant alleged that he was arrested for no reason and <br />Tased. He also complained about how the officers conducted the arrest. <br />Commissioner Carlson motioned that there was insufficient evidence to prove the <br />complaina. Commissioner Hu seconded, and it carried <br />unanimously. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carlson stated that he wants a letter sent to the Chief strongly asking <br />officers to respond to the commission on whether or not they received notification of <br />the complaint. This is a matter of training and professional conduct. <br /> <br /> <br />
