BEN: And you need a compensation plan that recognizes and rewards employees, <br />whether they're the blue collar employees or the executives. <br />SANTANGELO: But you mentioned with the Council salaries and the elected official <br />salaries, that's still up to their approval one way or the other, is that not -? <br />BEN: The Salary Commission sets those salaries, yes, but -. <br />SANTANGELO: But they have to be ratified by the Council or -. <br />BEN: No. <br />SANTANGELO: No. <br />BEN: The Salary Commission, by Charter, sets the salaries of the elected <br />officials, and there is nothing in there that says it requires Council approval. <br />SANTANGELO: Well, they should do a better job. <br />RAY: Sue. <br />IRVINE: I guess I'm kind of concerned if you really can't get members. You will <br />have the members when our elected officials then decide that they need a raise, is that when <br />people will be appointed and accept and -? <br />BEN: No. <br />IRVINE: Be on your Commission or what? <br />BEN: I don't understand the question. <br />IRVINE: I guess -. <br />BEN: I'm sorry. <br />IRVINE: Why can't you get a Commission appointed? People don't want to be on it <br />because they're doing nothing or why? Or do we need this Commission? <br />BEN: It's a very touchy issue. It's political, that's why.
