Page 44 <br />1 of coordination with the budget people because they <br />2 have -- nationwide and businesses outside in the real <br />3 world, salaries and wages, and salaries and benefits all <br />4 are measured easily. They know exactly what it is. In <br />5 fact, she told us -- I forgot what it was -- 65 <br />6 percent. I'm just pulling that out. Let's just say <br />7 it's 65 percent. And we propose another pay raise, and <br />8 this thing compounds. It doesn't -- it isn't just for <br />9 one year -- it's forever, these pay raises. So they <br />10 have to give us some indication that we're at the 65 <br />11 percent; we can't go up to 70 percent because guess <br />12 what, taxpayers? We either got to borrow money or we <br />13 got to raise your taxes even more. So that's why I'd <br />14 like, as a taxpayer, to have this input on -- they <br />15 cannot just be looking at the next year; they got to be <br />16 looking at how are we going to afford this going on? <br />17 Moreover, it's compounded dramatically with <br />18 the amount of money that the County has to put into the <br />19 retirement plan. This thing doesn't just end tomorrow; <br />20 it goes on forever. People live longer. It's already <br />21 underwater bigtime. The retirement plan that all of <br />22 these wonderful people here are included in is <br />23 underwater. And so, we have to be more responsible so <br />24 that we're not put under the -- <br />25 MR.
