Page 28
kind of formal evaluation process for the chief that we
could obtain at some point as part of the information
that we get?
MR. BECKER: We do have a formal process for
the chief. We have actually six performance elements
for the chief and we try to make those as objective as
possible. In those, we have indicators under each one
of those performance elements for what constitutes
outstanding performance.
We then -- and, actually, we're in the
process right now of evaluating the chief for this
calendar year. And what we do is we go out to each and
every one of our commissioners, and they provide a
narrative paragraph, if they'd like, for each one of
those performance elements and a grade from 5, being
outstanding, down to 1, being unacceptable. And then,
we take those scores and average them up for each one
of the performance elements, then we average it overall
to give a score for the chief. We take each one of
their narrative comments and we kind of work and mold
them together into something that's coherent as a
statement from the commission as a whole. We then vote
on that performance evaluation. We then, in December,
present that to the chief and discuss it with the
chief. It's then provided to the mayor and the chair
ISLAND COURT REPORTING & TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES
(808) 933-9800
