Mr. Teanio explained that the mission of Queen Lili'uokalani Trust is to foster resiliency of <br />Hawaiian children and to eliminate poverty. The trust serves around 10,000 children annually <br />and they are looking to expand their outreach and services to more youth across the island, <br />including North Kohala. He shared that the trust has recently expanded their qualifying criteria <br />for assistance to include: a minor with a child, children that have an incarcerated parent, <br />victims of sex trafficking, homeless children, children in homes with domestic violence, children <br />with a severely mentally ill parent, children in legal trouble, children suffering from substance <br />abuse in the home, children in foster care, children in drug treatment programs, and children <br />that have dropped out of school. <br />The trust handles case management work and counseling support as well as referrals to <br />specialists. The Trust also offers family focused programs including financial literacy help and <br />food sustainability. Mr. Teanio also shared that the trust engages in aina based educational <br />programs for kids, and they would like to begin offering those services to youth at the Kohala <br />Intermediate and High School. <br />For more information on Queen Lili'uokalani Trust and available programs contact Richard <br />'Likeke' Teanio at (808) 936-2177 or the main line for Queen Lili'uokalani Trust at (808) 329- <br />7336. <br />2. Presentation from Meredith Specier of the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program: <br />This business item was not addressed at the meeting. Due to the recent federal government <br />shutdown Meredith Specier, was unable to attend the meeting. <br />3. Report on the status of the "Welcome to North Kohala" brochure: Committee Member Ah Sam <br />shared that she has a compiled list of information to incorporate in the brochure. She also <br />stated there is a working draft that she will run by the community groups for feedback. She will <br />provide a draft of the "Welcome to North Kohala" brochure for the March 18, 2019 North <br />Kohala CDP Action Committee meeting. <br />4. Update on the Pololu lookout improvements project: Chair Hoffmann introduced the letter from <br />the Action Committee to the Planning Director to be forwarded to the State Legislature, <br />supporting the 2019 DLNR/DCFAW Capital Improvements Project for Pololu Valley lookout <br />improvements (Comm. No. 2019-04). The Action Committee reviewed and discussed the letter. <br />Committee Member Jeff Coakley motioned to approve the letter to the Planning Director. <br />Committee Member Benjamin Ney second the motion to approve the letter. <br />The motion to approve and submit the letter to the Planning Director passed with 6 votes aye <br />and 0 votes nay. <br />To view Comm.
