day for the entire month of June. <br />• HCOA's conducted its first annual training for <br />West Hawaii grandparents who are raising <br />grandchildren which attracted 15 <br />grandparents providing them with tools to help <br />relieve the stress associated with raising <br />grandchildren. <br />• Chronic Disease Self -Management Program <br />(CDSMP) Community Leader Training took place <br />in West Hawaii. Five lay leaders completed the <br />course which allowed for an additional 33 <br />participants to receive the training. <br />OUTSTANDING OLDER AMERICANS <br />Over 300 family members and well-wishers <br />attended the Outstanding Older Americans <br />Award Luncheon, held on May 5 at the Hilton <br />Waikoloa Village. The 2017 outstanding seniors <br />included: Gilbert DeMotta, Lillian Aratani, Dolly <br />Baquiran, Judith Bell, Patricia Dunn, Mary Jane <br />Kamoku, Deborah Koval, Connie Somera, and <br />Patricia Yamamoto. Following the awards <br />program, a random drawing was held to pick <br />two winners to represent the Big Island at a <br />statewide function held on Oahu. The lucky <br />winners were Tony Ancheta and Doris Davis. <br />2017 Outstanding Kupuna with Managing Director Wil Okabe (top left), and Aging <br />Executive Kimo Alameda (top right). <br />HCOA SERVED <br />ACTIVE SENIORS and CAREGIVERS <br />Through state grant funds, HCOA was able to <br />execute county -to -county contracts with Hawaii <br />County Elderly Activities Division for the provision <br />of services. These contracted services for active <br />seniors include: <br />Active Seniors on the Move at Kamana Senior Center <br />CAREGIVER RESPITE <br />In FY2017, HCOA contracted for over 40 <br />hours of individual counseling, peer <br />support groups, and training to help <br />caregiver's better cope with the burdens of <br />caregiving. HCOA also contracted to <br />service more than 80 caregivers providing <br />them with over 4,800 hours of temporary <br />relief from their caregiving <br />responsibilities at home or in an adult day <br />care setting. <br />LEGAL COUNSEL <br />HCOA's Elder Abuse Prevention Program <br />provides a variety of legal services for people at <br />risk for abuse or long-term placement. During the <br />fiscal year, HCOA contracted Legal Aid for the <br />provision of legal services to an estimated 240 <br />individuals with 80% of cases resulting in a <br />satisfactory resolution. <br />CONGREGATE MEALS <br />• In FY 2017, the Hawaii County Nutrition <br />Program (HCNP) served 1,030 seniors 3 to 5 <br />USDA federally approved meals per week. The <br />Congregate Nutrition Sites offer nutritious meals; <br />nutrition and health education information and <br />activities; opportunities for essential shopping; <br />and fun socialization activities and events <br />reducing isolation, depression, malnutrition, and <br />chronic health condition management. HCOA <br />also provided 40,294 trips of transportation to <br />over 365 seniors to -and -from the 15 sites located <br />around the island. <br />RETIRED SENIORS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (RSVP) <br />• The County of Hawaii RSVP program continually <br />recruits and maintains the largest number of <br />volunteers than any other county in the state.
