Page 17 <br />1 MR. HIGGINS: -- increases and all that kind <br />2 of stuff. <br />3 And, also, what's important -- I'd like to als <br />4 have them tell us what is the percentage of wages and <br />5 benefits as a percent of our budget. And the reason <br />6 for that is there's got to be a point at some point <br />7 where the lines cross where it's a real danger zone. <br />8 And so, they must have those numbers. I'd like to see <br />9 those numbers and how those numbers compare to the <br />10 past, say for the last 10 or 15 years. <br />11 CHAIR: Uh-huh. <br />12 MR. HIGGINS: She mentioned that I think one <br />13 time -- I could be wrong on this -- that it was about <br />14 70 percent. Well, most businesses cannot exist with a <br />15 70 percent factor of wages and benefits as a percent of <br />16 costs. <br />17 So, those are the kinds of things I'd like to <br />18 explore. It may be that we'd be wasting a lot of our <br />19 time talking to everybody and listening to everybody <br />20 saying how wonderful everybody is and they all deserve <br />21 pay raises and all of that, but as representing the <br />22 County, as Milton has said -- and that means <br />23 taxpayers -- I think we would be remiss if we didn't <br />24 pursue the financial side a lot more. <br />25 CHAIR: So -- <br />ISLAND COURT REPORTING & TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES <br />(808) 933-9800 <br />
