DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES <br />COUNTY OF HAWAI'I <br />FIRE CAPTAIN <br />SR 25; BU 11 <br />Duties Summary: <br />6.025 <br />Commands and supervises a company of firefighting, rescue, or hazardous <br />materials personnel on a regularly assigned shift; conducts training for the career and <br />volunteer fire units as a member of the training bureau; supervises and coordinates <br />activities of the fire prevention bureau within a geographical area; and performs <br />other related duties as required. <br />Distinguishing Characteristics: <br />This class differs from that of Battalion Chief in that it commands a fire, rescue, <br />or hazardous materials company on a regularly assigned shift or assists in carrying out <br />the major programs in a specialized bureau of the department; whereas, the <br />Battalion Chief plans and directs emergency activities of two or more fire, rescue, or <br />hazardous materials companies in a major geographical area (battalion), or <br />administers the county -wide activities of a specialized bureau. <br />Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive <br />of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duty statements does not preclude <br />the assignment of such duties if they are a logical assignment for the position and are <br />consistent with the class concept.) <br />Company Commander: <br />• Responds to fire and emergency alarms and directs subordinates in fighting fires, <br />search and rescue work, hazardous materials response, and protecting property. <br />• Assesses conditions, lays out strategy, and directs the placement of Fire personnel <br />and equipment to accomplish missions effectively. <br />• Determines the need for additional support and calls for same. <br />• Remains in command until the fire or emergency is over unless relieved by a <br />superior officer. <br />• Supervises all ground fires or emergency scene operations. <br />• Determines and reports cause of fire and estimated damage. <br />• Supervises station activities including the maintenance and upkeep of facilities, <br />grounds, and equipment. <br />.3-lawai'i County is ate EgitaCOyyortunity Provider ancfTmproyer. <br />
