Do the work. <br />EDUCATION - Knowledgeable and educated personnel are <br />the most valuable resources. <br />ACHIEVE - Set goals to achieve greater success. <br />DUTY - Do what is right, no matter how painful or <br />unpopular it is. <br />EMPOWER - Give those under your command the <br />confidence to make a positive difference. <br />RESPECT — Respect for others shows that you care. <br />SELFLESS — Give your best to those who are in need. <br />MISSION STATEMENT <br />The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service is dedicated to <br />providing rapid, reliable, professional emergency service to <br />the citizens and stakeholders of Birmingham. <br />We accomplish our mission through education, risk <br />reduction, fire suppression, emergency medical service and <br />other non -emergency activities. <br />We actively participate in our community striving to <br />efficiently and effectively utilize all resources at our <br />command to meet the needs of those we service. <br />Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department (BFRSD) <br />is a combined fire and emergency services department <br />that responded to 66,774 emergency incidents during <br />2018. BFRSD currently operates out of 31 Fire Stations, <br />located throughout the City of Birmingham, organized <br />into 4 Battalions, utilizing 29 engines, 2 trucks, 5 quints, <br />2 heavy rescues, 1 medium rescue, 19 ALS transport <br />units, 2 hazardous materials and 2 decon units. These <br />responses include 8,952 fire responses. The Department <br />protects a population of 212,237 that covers 163 square <br />miles comprised of residential, commercial and high-rise <br />residences and 40,680 businesses 24 hours a day, seven <br />days a week, 365 days a year. There is an additional <br />population that the Department protects through mutual <br />aid agreements in the Birmingham metropolitan area that <br />totals 1,128,047. In addition, the Department provides <br />Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) protection to <br />the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport that <br />currently operates 114 flights daily. <br />The Department consists of 702 operating budgeted <br />positions; of which, 659 are uniformed firefighters <br />committed to eliminating threats to the lives, safety and <br />property of Birmingham citizens and to those who visit our <br />great city. Additionally, BFRS Department has an additional <br />twelve (12) Firefighters not funded in the operating budget. <br />These twelve (12) Firefighters are funded through a FEMA <br />SAFER grant. <br />JOB DESCRIPTION: FIRE CHIEF <br />The Fire Chief is responsible for developing and <br />implementing the strategic direction for the Birmingham <br />Fire and Rescue Service Department. Through strategic <br />initiatives, the Fire Chief is responsible for planning and <br />organizing the various activities and operations of the <br />stations within the Fire and Rescue Service Department <br />to ensure effective and responsive services are available <br />to all citizens and neighborhoods. This includes tasks <br />related to serving the public safety needs of a growing, <br />diverse population; overseeing the efficiency and safety <br />of the department's personnel; establishing procedures <br />to address both fire responses and patient transports in <br />the Birmingham metropolitan area, along with Aircraft <br />Rescue and Fire Fighting services; forging valuable and <br />collaborative relationships with the community and local, <br />regional, and federal agencies; leveraging sophisticated <br />technology and analytics to identify and manage fire <br />trends; and creating and implementing new programs to <br />face developments in fire administration. The Fire Chief <br />formulates and executes a broad range of policies and <br />procedures, establishes short- and long-term financial <br />plans, works collaboratively with internal and external <br />parties, establishes management practices and processes <br />that ensure the accomplishment of performance standards, <br />and provides technical supervision. <br />
