REQUIRED EXPERIENCE <br />AND BACKGROUND <br />When recruiting for the Fire Chief position in the City of <br />Birmingham, the focus is on finding people who have the <br />following types of GENERAL and SPECIFIC experience <br />and background: <br />Degree Requirements <br />Possesses a bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire <br />Administration, Emergency Medical Services, Business <br />Administration, Public Administration, Psychology, <br />Sociology, or related field <br />Specific Experience <br />1. Held role with significant senior command (e.g., <br />Chief, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, Battalion Chief, <br />Division Chief, District Chief) in an urbanized fire <br />department or agency <br />2. Experience working in a fire department or agency <br />that provides emergency medical transport services <br />3. Knowledge of federal, state, and/or local laws, rules, <br />and regulations and experience maintaining and <br />enforcing them <br />4. Experience with, and/or knowledge of fire <br />operations, including fire prevention, fire <br />communication and dispatch, training and <br />safety, emergency medical services, operations, <br />administrative services, and logistics <br />5. Experience evaluating and adjusting firefighting <br />and fire administration techniques to meet evolving <br />trends and community needs <br />Experience managing a work unit <br />1. Experience as a third -level executive supervisor (i.e., <br />oversees a supervisor of a supervisory position) in a <br />fire department or agency <br />2. Responsible for setting goals and making key <br />decisions for an organizational unit <br />3. Managed a budget for an organizational unit <br />4. Responsible for evaluating the performance of those <br />within an organizational unit <br />Experience implementing and monitoring work unit <br />strategy <br />1. Responsible for leading a concrete substantial <br />change effort <br />2. Developed and implemented a strategic initiative <br />3. Responsible for managing and delivering results on <br />several high-level projects at the organizational unit <br />level <br />4. Experience developing policies and procedures for <br />an organizational unit <br />Experience interacting with key internal and external <br />stakeholders <br />1. Experience working in a high stress environment <br />involving multiple constituents <br />2. Responsible for a function that delivers services to <br />internal and external customers <br />3. Held roles involving forging positive interpersonal <br />working relationships <br />4. Responsible for the development and growth of <br />multiple others (e.g., coaching activities, formal <br />mentoring) <br />5. Responsible for delivering complex communications <br />to multiple parties (verbal and/or written) <br />Experience working in environments that require <br />adherence to high professional and ethical standards <br />1. Demonstrates a track record of ethical professional <br />behavior <br />2.
