PREFERRED EXPERIENCE <br />AND BACKGROUND <br />When recruiting for the Fire Chief position in the City of <br />Birmingham, it is also ideal to find people who have the <br />following types of GENERAL and SPECIFIC experience <br />and background to the extent that the below experiences <br />and background are identifiable: <br />Degree and Certification Preference <br />1. Possesses an advanced degree (e.g., master's) <br />Fire Science, Fire Administration, Emergency <br />Medical Services, Business Administration, Public <br />Administration, Psychology, Sociology, or related field <br />2. Possesses certification from executive fire services <br />development program (e.g., Executive Fire Officer <br />Program, National Fire Service Staff and Command <br />Course, etc.) <br />3. Possession of an Emergency Medical Services <br />(EMS) Certification (e.g., EMT, EMR, Paramedic, <br />etc.) <br />Specific Experience <br />1. Held a leadership role within a fire department or <br />agency that provides emergency medical transport <br />services <br />2. Experience engaging with citizens or the community <br />on large scale civic projects or matters <br />3. Experience incorporating diverse viewpoints and <br />addressing the needs of diverse individuals through <br />policies, procedures, and/or personal action <br />4. Experience leveraging sophisticated technology to <br />improve firefighting methods <br />5. Experience working with and developing relationships <br />with local and/or national media agencies <br />6. Experience analyzing and interpreting statistical data <br />7. Demonstrates a track record of staying abreast of <br />current trends and developments in firefighting and <br />fire administration <br />Experience managing a work unit <br />1. Engaged in concrete personal development <br />activities (e.g., formal programs, taking on stretch <br />assignments, integrating a development plan into <br />daily activities) <br />2. Held roles in which they have delegated important <br />responsibilities to others <br />Experience implementing and monitoring work unit <br />strategy <br />1. Responsible for guiding the implementation of an <br />innovative solution (e.g., organizational process, <br />product) <br />Experience interacting with key internal and external <br />stakeholders <br />1. Held roles in which they were responsible for <br />resolving conflicts and driving consensus <br />2.
