JNSY'.OF - <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br />tEOF MF'� <br />RESOLUTION NO. .100 23 <br />A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br />AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING THE SAME TO A <br />DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE WEST HAWAII <br />VETERANS CEMETERY DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION ASSOCIATION TO <br />ASSIST WITH EXPENSES RELATED TO ITS WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL <br />PROJECT. <br />WHEREAS, the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery Development and Expansion <br />Association (WHVCDEA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established in 2005 as <br />an unofficial caretaker of the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery-Pu`u Ho`omaha O Na Po`e Koa <br />O Hawaii Komohana ("West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery") and works in cooperation with <br />government agencies, veterans, and civic -minded volunteers to assist with the development, <br />expansion, landscaping, reforestation, and general betterment of the West Hawaii Veterans <br />Cemetery; and <br />WHEREAS, under the stewardship of the WHVCDEA, the West Hawaii Veterans <br />Cemetery was granted "shrine" status by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, <br />making the 62 -acre cemetery in Kailua-Kona one of only three state-owned veterans cemeteries <br />in the nation to have that distinction, and the only one in Hawaii; and <br />WHEREAS, the WHVCDEA is planning a World War II Memorial to add to the <br />cemetery's Memorial Walkway to honor the sacrifice of life, limb, and duty that servicemembers <br />made in the global conflict; and <br />WHEREAS, the World War II Memorial will commemorate persons, places, and events <br />from the war that have a special significance to Hawaii, including the attack on Pearl Harbor, <br />the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the 100th Infantry Battalion, and Camp Tawara; and <br />WHEREAS, the WHVCDEA is requesting funding assistance to help cover necessary <br />expenses relating to planning, design, and construction of a World War II Memorial at the West <br />Hawaii Veterans Cemetery; and <br />
