Dear Mr. Tyler, ~ppy JUL ~ Ail 8 53
6 Ii;'111 ~z5
While reading the controversy regarding Nester's T:~n~~Ievelopment
in the Ka'u Calender, we were stun~nQL~fdi find'tl~~ a~v~ocat~gl!,the _ • ~ ~ !
i
development, Bob Taylor and Dave Shriner, representing that the poor in
Ka'u would benefit. Both these people will benefit tremendously by filling
their own pockets from this project. Bob Taylor has told people that he
expects to be the prime contractor and Dave Shriner has told people that he
will be involved big time in the solar electric and other aspects of
development. Verifiable is that Taylor built Nester's house for Hester and
that Shriner built his solar energy/heating system under another person's
license. Dave Shriner's wife, a realtor, is slotted to represent the sales!
These are the type of people that optimize the "clear it ,dam it ,build it"
mentality. While their interests are in pure self gain, the people that spoke
out in opposition to the rezoning were concerned about the inevitable
impact to the community.
Taking 20 acre prime Ag. land and chopping it up for what cannot

possibly be misinterpreted as anything but gentlemen's farms and financial

gain would be criminal for a committee that is suppose to represent the
BEST interests of the community.
Quite arguable reasons that rezoning these Ag-20 parcels to Ag-5 will

provide no long-term benefit to Ka'u ,and harm the local people follow:
1. 5 acre parcels are next to impossible to make a decent living off of
relative to viable potential commercial crops which are raised in Ka'u
(i.g. coffee, Mac nuts, etc.) The ma & pa fruit stand stuff one or two
days a week is not aliving -it's a supplement!!
2. The quick money in construction such as this goes, to any significant
degree, to a few pockets. The labored involved will receive some
months of wages, and then the negative effect is irreversible for all
for the short-term gain of a few. The soul of Ka'u loses.
3. The building materials, especially on custom housing will be ordered
from the mainland or some small percentage dealer here. All that
money for materials does nothing for Ka'u.
4. 5 acre farms that are obviously being designed for people relatively
elite to our ka'u friends and neighbors will push the land owning
potential of our people further away. It is already out of control with
the "farming" techniques of the local realtors who encourage no end
property inflation for financial gain.
Comm. No.
Ref. To:
Ref.
