Arakaki
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo. HI 96720
Dear Councilmen:
Our business is located in the Kailua-Kona Industrial Subdivision on Kaiwi Street
known as the Gold Coast Business Centers. Recently, we were told that there is a
pending sign bill, No. 280, that will necessitate removal of the sign for our business.
When we moved into our leased space, we simply changed the vinyl letters that were on
the existing signboard to spell out the name of our business. I understand that these
signboards (measuring approximately2' x 8') have been here since the center was
constructed about 30 years ago and that these are placed on the marquee/mansard that
was built for these signs.
The sign ordinance for the "Kailua-Kona Special llistrict" that encompasses the
businesses in the Village (Alii Drive) seems to have the same criteria as the Kailua-Kona
Industrial Subdivision (old industrial). We believe that we are not the same as the
Village, given that most of us do not operate boutiques and do not have pedestrian traffic,
and therefore require bigger signs and/or ones that are higher from the ground so that
vehicular traffic will see us.
We appreciate and support your efforts in doing away with oversized and reaz-lit signs, as
well as banners and sandwich boazds. We only ask your indulgence in considering the
language as proposed to be amended in the July 12, 2004, letter from Grubb & Ellis/CBI-
Hawaii.
Sincerely,
J
t /
Philip A.
