One may
understand the planning that did take place when Boise Cascade and the Waikoloa Land
Company had their vision to develop the area from the Mamalahoa Highway all the way
down to Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, but most of us that bought homes here were not let
in on that master plan and would have been surprised to find out that the developers were
not going to be held to providing the infrastructure needed to support the people from
whom they hoped to reap their profits.
I have attended sessions of the planning commission held over here in recent years, and I
did hear Chris Yuen speak in Waikoloa not too long ago, showing us all the growth that is
to come to our Village and surrounding area. I have written him and his department
conveying my concerns before, and having received no reply, feel that they do not
necessarily want to hear from citizens, especially about areas zoned so many years ago.
I ask you to please be creative in finding ways to seek commitments from developers now
when they must reapply for extensions or when they plan to sell tracts of land to others
with their hopes of reaping huge monetary rewards. I have faith that you can attach
requirements for safety, roads, water, parks, schools and other important features now,
and not let the antiquated planning that had no foresight for the future be passed on
unchallenged. This pending request for an extension concerning Waikoloa Highlands Goif
Estates is an opportunity to make enlightened changes to benefit the community.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely yours,
an L.
