On a beautiful day, you see the majestic Mauna Kea and Hilo Bay embracing our hometown Hilo. The Downtown Visioning process has shown us what can happen when a small group of committed volunteers gather together, take risks and dream big. Without their commitment and willingness to explore new territory, their story, including the Vision and Action Plan, could not have happened. This has been one of the most organic community-based planning process we have seen come to fruition in a long time. There are lessons learned from the Downtown Hilo Community visioning process. One is that there is no other way than for government to partner with community and to collaborate in solving our problems and planning for our future. This document tells a very special story about how the vision process came together, and it provides us with a new creative mindset that will help other communities to begin to tell their story and achieve their dreams for the future. I commend the Friends of Downtown Hilo Steering Committee for all their hard work and their dedication to create a Vision that will guide us to sustain Downtown Hilo and to ensure that it remains a special place where we can live, work and play. With their experience behind them, I look to them for their leadership as we begin to implement this Vision plan. Various departments within the County of Hawaii have been identified as Lead Solution Partners in the Vision Action Plan.
