Ishibashi, Jr. on Resolution 290-06

Aloha! My name is Wallace A. Ishibashi, Jr. I am a Business Agent for the ILWU Local
142, Hawaii Division.

I know many residents in the affected Na`alehu and Pahala neighborhoods because of my
job representing our members and because of longtime involvement in the Ka`u
community.

I am in favor of this resolution. When C. Brewer decided to sell the homes to our
members, it was a dream come true for sugar workers who otherwise had very little
chance of buying a house.

The E.P.A.'s ban on gang cesspools took everyone by surprise. The Na`alehu and Pahala
residents were in danger of losing their homes and had nowhere to turn.

When people are in trouble, they look for help from government and organizations like
the ILWU. The County and the ILWU worked together to come up with the creative
solution found in this resolution.

We hope that the Committee on Finance and the Council will support this resolution as a
way to save 275 homes and to preserve Na`alehu Park. I thank the Council for you
consideration of my opinion.

Comm.
Ref. To: Pro we
Rof.
